The house of Arzenšek

The oldest house in Trbovlje, mentioned in the land register in 1582 as count’s hunter house, is today well-known as a hunting mansion, dated 1695. It used to be a special lord’s office, but it was abandoned by the second half of the 18th century. Count Maks Jožef Wildenstein sold the house to the National tax administration where they had a bureau. In 1815 the building was bought by the National tobacco office that used it as its agency. In 1829 financial inspector ordered that the building should be sold at a public auction. There it was bought by Jakob and Marija Peklar who had an inn and a butcher’s shop in it, the first in old Trbovlje. After year 1826 the owner became Ljudmila Arzenšek. In 1983 they began to renovate the house, but its roof was destroyed only a couple of years later. Today it is renovated in the old style, but with a modern extension and is owned by the municipality Trbovlje. In the building there is a well-known restaurant Štorman.

The park

On the site of today’s’ central park of Trbovlje there was once the city’s cemetery, but it was transferred due to the lack of space to upper Trbovlje at around 1975/1976. Only trees are left from the old cemetery. Along the left side of the park runs the stream Trboveljščica and asphalt paths run through the park. There are also several benches spread along the park. In the central part, where the paths cross, stands a beautiful sun clock made of marble. Nearby, we can find a playground for children. At the end of the park there is an amphitheatre and underneath there is a big chess field also made of marble. Here, different cultural events are held every summer. Dogs aren’t allowed in the park.

Town hall Trbovlje

Bureaucracy was very simple in the 1850’s. The first two mayors had their offices at home, where they also kept their meetings. Later they had their offices in a house on Piškovec, where there was also prison. Later on the mayor’s office was in an old school. A new town hall in Trbovlje was built in 1939. The main portal is enriched by sculptures of two coal-miners, that were created by well-established Slovenian sculpturer, Zdenko Kalin. Sculptures coincide well with the building’s architecture, but the mighty impression was spoilt by a late extension of a massive straight jutting roof above the main entrance that limits the space at a frontal view, which was prior controlled by sculptures. Both figures are made of artificial material, they are made in supernatural size and well modeled from all sides. The miner on the left side is proudly drawn up with a pick and a lamp in his hand before going to the coal mine. The miner on the right comes from a gallery equipped with indispensable miners attributes in one hand, while screening his eyes from shinning sun-light. Both miners are naked to the waist, athletically built and with idealized facial features, which is a typical feature of traditional sculpture with well recognizable style features. Both sculptures have been declared cultural monuments by the municipality of Trbovlje in 1996.

Sallaumines

The street of Sallumines is a neighbourhood with around 1500 and 2000 inhabitants who live in apartments of different sizes. The neighbourhood consists of three blocks of flats. In between there is an asphalt courtyard with two smaller meadows. On the other side of the blocks there is a parking space that was built in 1984. A part of this neighbourhood are also two older houses in Sallaumines: the “Fritz’s house”, which is located opposite the old park in front of the town hall, once a part of Lenin’s square and “The round house”, located on the other side of the neighbourhood, once a part of the Kešetovo. Both houses were built in 1960’s. On the right side of today’s Sallaumines used to be the Bricl’s hill, where children used to sledge and ski. On the plain underneath the hill there was a circus every year. A subsidiary football court and a few tennis courts were located on the left side. In between these two parts there was a road. When the neighbourhood was built, they named it the Sallauminess street after the French town with which the city of Trbovlje is connected.

A Mother with a child in front of the children’s hospital

This monument has also been modeled by Zdenko Kalin. Although the work was already made, the sculpture stayed in Ljubljana during the Second World War and was brought in Trbovlje only in 1949. The monument has been relocated several times, until it got the present location in front of the children’s hospital in Trbovlje. A mother with a child is Kalin’s earlier work that expresses a sense of firm line and full plastic form. The mother is simply dressed and her hair is covered with a headscarf on the back of her head. Despite being simply dressed she looks elegant and relaxed while carrying an energetic child on her right shoulder. Mother’s facial moves express her nobility, and her child expresses naughtiness.

Delavski dom Trbovlje (Community home of Trbovlje)

In 1903 workers headed by Jožef Rinaldo established a shop “Konzum” that was located in Šuntanaj’s house in the lower part of the village Petelinova vas. It soon had to be closed because Rinaldo couldn’t pay for two wagons of flour. Ignac Sitter supported him, collected the needed money with the help of his colleagues and bailed the money in court. This resulted in re-opening of the shop. After this event the workers have decided to build their own community home. They first paid 5000 crowns, which was the money that the shop “Konzum” had in a savings bank. They bought the estate, once a part of Pavšar’s farm, from Peter Grobler in 1909. The estate was bought by Ignacij Sitter, Franc Gradišek, Andrej Bravec and Janez Jaretin. The estate later on became property of “Building and Inkeeper’s cooperative society”. The building was built in 1910. Inside there was a shop, an inn and a club house. After 10 years a concert hall was added to the building.

The first community home was pulled down in 1954 because a new Community home was being built underneath it. The new building was opened on 29. 11. 1956. They also had to pull down Povše’s inn and Zdolšek’s house. There were numerous activities going on in the building of the Community home Trbovlje. There was a music school, District worker’s university, Radio Trbovlje and the headquarters of Svoboda societies.

Since the building was built in pre-television times there was a lot of space on stage, behind the stage, in both halls, in the lecture room and in a smoking room, in the basement and in subsidiary places as well as in front of the building and behind it. You can easily fit 500 people into the hall. A modern cinema has 356 the seats. The main theatre hall offers 434 seats.

The front of the building is convex from the entrance to the left and then it breaks several times in a cascade way. The front is ornamented with a mighty mosaic of Marij Pregelj. The mosaic has been divided into four parts due to the architecture of the building. The wall ornaments composed of colorful stones show the artist’s reflection on war and peace.

Symbolism presented by the mosaic shows different elements: freedom, civilization, fun, peace, war, national liberation front, love, life of miners. It also connects art with receptive audience.

WORKERS’ HOSTELS Rudarske kolonije

Workers’ hostels are hired apartments that were built by contractors for their workers near factories and coal mines. Earnings at one hand and assured apartments on the other hand have unstoppablly attracted loads of people that had nothing but bare hard-working hands. In Zasavje region they began to build workers’ hostels in 1970’s after TPD took over all the coal-mines of Zasavje. Up until the year 1870 it was common for workers’ families to own apartments with one room. There was a room and a kitchen in the same space, once shared by several families. After 1870 there were workers’ hostels with joint kitchen and separate rooms and a kitchen for each family. Miner’s Apartments were given to people according to special criteria. The first condition was to work for five years at the coal mine and they had to have a family if they wanted to have an apartment with a kitchen. If the owner of the apartment lost the job or died, the family had to move in 30 days. A technical clerk watched over the miner’s apartments and he was also supervising if the apartments were tidy. Such workers’ hostels can still be found in Trbovlje: Njiva, Petelinova vas, Barbara, Pauer kolonija, Fana, Terezija, Žabja vas.
